Almost two seasons later in the far off north of Equestria things were stirring in a kingdom that’s activity had been put on hold for near a thousand years. In a palace made of crystal there was a room an in that room was a large red-brown equine. He wasn’t a pony but a reindeer, his antlers carved with symbols and the words ‘Naughty’ and ‘Nice’ on each side of them. He had tools, a hammer and a chisel, attached to his hooves as he carved into a large block of crystal. Around him, miniature versions of ponies called ‘elves’ scurried around, eating a large plate of cookies. Musical blasted from a device that he had made, humming as he worked the buck was almost completely surrounded by toys and light that brought a happy, cozy feeling to this bust work space. “Still waiting for cookies!” he called with a deep, throaty voice. The eyes of the elves shot open as they realized they were eating his cookies! Scurrying underneath his hooves the tinkling sound of the miniature ponies moved to put new cookies on the plate. The reindeer dusted off the crystal block as it got smaller and smaller until it became a small boat. Taking a cookie from the plate he smiled as he set the little boat to sail… in the air. Yes, with no unicorn magic the little boat sailed on its own in the space in front of the reindeer and round his head and around the room. It was just nearing the door when there was a sudden whoosh and the little toy was smashed into hundreds of pieces. There was a series of yells that went from disappointment, to shock, and then frustration. The creature that opened the door was a Minotaur, he stared at the reindeer while the antlered equine rubbed his head, “How many times have I asked you to knock!?”

“But sir we have a problem with the map!” the Minotaur said hurriedly.

“What?” Looking up at the Minotaur he saw the creature wasn’t joking. Running out of the door he was still careful not to step on his miniature helpers. “Shoo with you, why are you always under hooves?”

He pushed the Minotaurs gathered around the map out of the way, looking up at the map himself the sight made his blue eyes narrow. The map of Equestria was held up in the foyer of the palace that the reindeer had made his home. Usually the map was dotted with glowing yellow lights, each one as bright as a firefly, but now they were flickering, all of them. Some were going out and then coming back, he never saw anything like this before. Looking to the other Minotaurs around him he asked them if the magic was stable, if there was anything outside interfering with the lights in such a way. All of them shook their heads. Something moves in the corner of the reindeer’s eyes, something dark and quick. Jumping back he watched as his shadow and the shadows of his assistants – Minotaur and miniature pony – stretched toward the map along with every other shadow in the room. They moved like smoke curling around the bottom of the map and formed a much larger creature at the top, almost like an eerie waterfall of black water.

“No way,” the reindeer said taking a step back, his blue eyes widening as he realized what shape the shadows were forming. Before he could do anything the shadows swelled and dispersed, covering the room in black smoke. Coughing the reindeer looked at his faithful assistants and when he saw they were fine he frowned looking a small group of miniature ponies, “You there, make preparations, the others are coming.”

Stomping his cloven hoof down on the space before him anypony would have missed the ‘G’ symbol on the floor. The palace was meant to be a beacon back when the kingdom was active, but lacking the Crystal Heart the reindeer and other Guardians had come up with a different way to send the lights across Equestria. Though the lights didn’t shine as bright they still spread across the world reaching every corner of Equestria and could only be seen by the fellow Guardians

In a small town in western Equestria, gold sand travelled down to the windows of each young colt or filly and found its way to form their dreams. The sand swirled making images above their heads, each little face smiling, enjoying the dream. Following the gold sand back up there sand a young golden unicorn foal, with a gold cloud as cutie mark. From his horn came the gold sand as he smiled watching the foals enjoy their dreams. Turning around to face another town he saw the rainbow lights in the sky. Using his magic, he transformed the cloud of sand into a carpet of sand as he flew to where the lights came from. In the city of Canterlot a small breezie flew into the home of a young colt. It flew under the pillow and came back out with a tooth in its hooves. With a smile on its face it flew back to its home. Once it arrived there were hundreds of little breezies flying around with teeth in their hooves. They flew to small containers and place the teeth in them. One little breezie flew up to a sort of Pegasus pony who had butterfly wings instead of feathered wings. She had a green coat and a tooth as a cutie mark. But instead of hair she had feathers, bright colors of green, purple, and gold for her mane and tail. One little breezie flew up to the Pegasus, and she turned around as her bright purple eyes saw the lights, she flew off as fast as she could, followed by five breezies. Underneath the ground, through the tunnels ran a grey horse. On his hooves were golden guards with jewels in them. He had s strange pattern of streaks on his back, hind legs, and forehead as well as a small sun and egg cutie mark. His breath quickened as he ran faster to his destination, his grey and white tail bouncing behind him. He soon jumped out of a hole and arrived in the snowy north. “Its freezing!” he exclaimed as he ran toward the castle. “Oh! I feel my hooves! I can’t feel my hooves!” The reindeer was pacing the floor as each guardian arrives. The foal descended to the reindeer, a question mark forming over his head as he tilted his head to the side.

“Yes I know Sand,” the reindeer said walking with the yellow foal, “But I wouldn’t have interrupted your duties if this wasn’t something important. I saw Pitch, he was here at the Empire.”

“Pitch Black?” the bird pony asked flying closer to the reindeer, “You mean the Boogie Stallion?”

“North you can’t be serious,” the large grey horse said going to the reindeer, “We made Pitch go out after Celestia stopped Nightmare Moon.”

“But I am!” North insisted almost hopping toward the map, “My shadow stretched, and then this smoke formed and covered the map and then this shape-”

“Whoa wait,” the grey horse said pounding his hoof impatiently, “Black smoke and shadows? I thought you said saw Pitch.”

“Well no not exactly but-” once again interrupted North was about to lose his temper.

“Oh great here we go, look pal Winter Wrap up is over and the Summer Sun Celebration is going to happen in less than a month. I still have the whole season needing to be prepared.”

“Yes, but Spring Shire, this is the 1,000 Summer Sun, don’t you think it’s a little more important this time and that this shadow could be a problem? Look I know he is up to something very bad. I can feel it, in my belly.”

“You mean you summoned me because of your belly? If I did this to you a month before Heart’s Warming Eve-”

Shire was cut off by North tapping his hoof to his cheek. “Shire, the Summer Sun celebration is not Heart’s Warming Eve,” North said with a smile. As the two bucks continued to argue with each other over the upcoming celebration, the bird like pony has focused her short attention back to her job almost over talking the two large equines. None of them noticed the moon that was coming into view above or that the Sand Foal was trying desperately to get their attention. Having enough of being ignored the little foal went to the nearest crystal pillar and started bagging his hoof against it. When the Guardians finally looked at him he formed an arrow with his hand and pointed it at the moon above.

“Ah Mare in Moon!” Great North said with a smile before looking back at Sand Foal, “Sandy why didn’t you say something?”

Giving up the little foal let himself drop and covered his face with the bend of his hoof, not looking at the moon or the other Guardians.

“What new do you bring us?” North asked the moon as its beams of blue light shone down on the ‘G’ shaped mark from before. Shadows began to form taking the shape of a Changeling, the silhouette was all too familiar to the gathered equines.

“It is Pitch,” Spring Shire said looking at North. North smirked, tapping his cloven hoof to his belly, inclining  his head before looked back up at the moon, “Luna what do we do?”

As to answer the ‘G’ on the floor split in two and out from it rose a dark blue crystal. The light from the moon shone bright on the crystal as a magic aura began to sweep and form on the top. They all knew what this meant; the Mare in the Moon was picking a new Guardian. The Guardians chattered excitedly wondering and guessing who the new member was going to be. Finally the aura took shape into a pony they all knew, wither for a good reason or not. A Pegasus stallion wearing a hoodie and holding a wooden staff in his hooves.

“Jack Frost?” Great North said tilting his head to the side, even he hadn’t had Jack in mind. However the choice didn’t seem to bother Tooth Mare or Sand Foal.

“No! No way!” Shire said jumping in front of the moon’s light, looking up at the moon itself, eyes focused on the alicorn imprint there, “No Luna you cannot be serious, not him!”

“Well as long as he helps to protect the foals,” the Tooth Mare said with a smile. But the moon remained silent and the aura did not change.

Groaning Shire shook his head, “Jack Frost?! He doesn’t care about foals! Why him?! He;s the reason Winter Wrap up takes so long in the first place. He’s a pain! He’s irresponsible, selfish, childish-”

“A Guardian,” North said with a nod accepting the idea of the young mustang being part of the team, and seeing why the Mare in the Moon had chosen him.

“Jack Frost is many things but he is no Guardian!” Shire protested again but only for it to fall on deaf ears.

“Well let’s go get him,” North said looking at Spring Shire and the Minotaurs.
